All your confidential business information is stored on your computer and now you need a new machine – what’s the best way to protect your data? The only foolproof way may be to smash the old hard-drive to smithereens with a hammer, according to a consumer group!

A British data back-up firm, though, says the destruction is not environmentally friendly and secure solutions do exist.


turn your cellphone into an internet connection

If you’re on the road a lot and need access to your e-business, you can easily turn your cellphone into a router that picks up your broadband account and sends it to your laptop to allow you to use the internet wherever you are.

Here are two software products that do this:  JoikuSpot and wmwifirouter.

(I have not tried either product and was simply interested to know of their existence. You will need to check if they work with your phone.)


byo computer: US company’s innovative scheme

US software company Citrix Systems is rolling out a new programme for its workers: BYOC – Bring Your Own Computer. Employees get a US$2,100 (NZ$3130) stipend to buy a laptop and three-year service plan, and can choose any machine they want. As one corporate analyst says, having the freedom to buy the kind of computer you want would be seen as a perk, and a happy employee is usually a productive one. Could this be the start of something?
